A Book By Jim Rossi

Jim Rossi is a LinkedIn Top Voice, historian, and self-styled consulting detective. He wrote for the Los Angeles Times, Bike, and many other publications before they cratered, then earned master’s degrees from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in Las Vegas. This is his first book.

Things are coming along, except for Rossi. It’s getting to the point where I can’t do any business in Vegas. He is losing his grip and trying to take me down with him.

The Case of The Cleantech Con Artist
What is the ultimate Vegas rush: pulling off a multimillion-dollar con job – or blowing one up?
Las Vegas, founded on the idea of getting people to not think about the consequences of their actions, seems a most unlikely place for Earth’s best shot at sustainability. But look closer. Las Vegas is also the City of Second Chances, the surrounding Mojave Desert a land of mirages. Here the line separating reality and fantasy gets blurred. So do the lines separating academic research, business, journalism, and fraud.
As the Great Recession craters Vegas in 2013, the surrounding Mojave booms with solar energy. I had been a young science writer in San Francisco, hustling jobs until the journalism industry imploded. Then I scored a chance to go to graduate school without going into debt – with just one catch: I had to move to Sin City. As I go local, I make new friends – and a few enemies. Among them: a young British tycoon who bought Mike Tyson’s mansion from The Hangover, , professors and students, poker players and golf hustlers, mountain bikers and exotic dancers, FBI agents and ex-cons, friendly neighborhood bounty hunters, and one charismatic frenemy: a young, clean energy technology entrepreneur named Xavier.
As The Strip seduces me, my master’s thesis transforms into a real-life scavenger hunt that uncovers a sprawling renewable energy/video game/business coach/real estate/trust fund charity/intellectual property theft scam spanning from the Vegas Underworld to China and back to Silicon Valley. As privacy disappears in the 21st century, turnabout is fair play. The hunter becomes the hunted. And in Sin City, you can be whoever you want to be – but you have to pay the consequences.

Why Patreon?

Patreon is an experiment in cutting out the middlemen – advertisers and donors – so creators like me can have a direct relationship with our readers. With your support, I will:

  • Continue and expand my content offerings on LinkedIn and elsewhere while paying my bills and putting my Xterra-living days fondly behind me.
  • Continue experimenting with a Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesisapproach on a wide range of subjects. This approach – having at least 2 strong different perspectives at all times – prevents echo chambers from forming in the first place.
  • Support myself while writing nonfiction books – my first, the nonfiction Cleantech Con Artist: A True Vegas Caper comes out later in 2018. Reading this book will significantly reduce your fraud risk – a trillion-dollar problem.

Hustler (n.) – (1) an enterprising person determined to succeed; a go-getter. (2) Slang. A person who employs fraudulent or unscrupulous methods to obtain money; a swindler.”
